Hiking Cap Guide

Choose a hiking cap for hours on the trail, changing layers and the way you pack. Compare comfort with your sunglasses and backpack before settling on a shape.

Check the fit with the rest of your kit

Try your cap with the sunglasses and backpack you usually take walking. Turn your head, look down as if checking your next step and look ahead again. The brim should leave you a comfortable view, while the crown and closure should sit naturally without needing repeated adjustment.

A short try-on cannot tell you everything about a full day's wear, but pressure at the forehead or temples is a reason to compare another shape. Start with your head measurement: the Pro range is 55–61 cm. Crown depth and structure matter alongside circumference.

Find your Pro fit

Structured or packable?

A defined crown keeps a more pronounced silhouette when you move between the trail and everyday wear. A soft cap is a different choice if you often remove it and put it in your bag. Aero has a flexible low-profile crown and a foldable brim, making it the line to compare when packing space matters.

Check where you plan to store the cap. Avoid flattening a structured brim under other equipment. If you wear a hood over your cap, try the combination beforehand and check that turning your head still feels natural.

Choose for changing conditions

Flow, Motion and Pulse have a water-repellent finish; Aero and Focus do not. This can be one part of your decision, but it is not a waterproof guarantee for a wet day. Choose the rest of your clothing for the route and conditions rather than expecting the cap to do every job.

A brim offers shade in the direction it faces, but fit and visibility remain important. Try the cap with your usual sunglasses and consider the exposed sides of your face and neck when putting together your outdoor kit.

After your session

Follow the care label for your model. At Blackskies, our post-sport routine for Flow, Motion, Pulse and Aero is to rinse the cap with clean water and leave it to air dry. Let the sweatband dry completely before storage, support the cap’s normal shape and avoid direct heat.

For Focus and for other materials, check the model-specific guidance rather than assuming the same routine applies. Our cap care guide explains the differences across Pro, Originals and Family.

Can I hike in a running cap?

Yes. Choose by construction, comfort and the way you carry your kit. Aero and Focus can both be considered for walking; the running label does not restrict where you wear them.

Is a water-repellent cap suitable for prolonged rain?

Water-repellent does not mean waterproof. Flow, Motion and Pulse have this finish, but a cap should not be treated as guaranteed protection through a wet hike.

Can every Pro cap be folded into a backpack?

No. Aero has a foldable brim. Give structured models enough space to keep their shape and avoid packing heavy objects on top of them.

How do I choose the right size?

Measure your head circumference and compare it with the Pro range of 55–61 cm. Then check crown depth, brim position and pressure around the forehead. Use the size guide before ordering, particularly if your measurement falls outside the range.
