Kids Cap Guide
Choose a kids cap by current head circumference and comfortable fit. Age can be a rough clue, but it is not a substitute for measuring.
Measure the child, not the age label
Wrap a soft measuring tape around the head just above the eyebrows and ears, keeping it level around the back. It should touch the skin comfortably without digging in. Read the circumference in centimetres and repeat once to check the result.
If you use string, choose a non-stretch piece, mark the overlap and measure it against a ruler. Avoid guessing from a sibling’s size or an old cap: the child’s current measurement gives you a better starting point.
Blackskies kids sizes
| Size | Head circumference | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| M | 45–49 cm | Choose when the measured circumference is in this range and the crown sits comfortably. |
| L | 49–54 cm | Choose when the measured circumference is in this range and the cap stays secure without overtightening. |
| At 49 cm | Ranges meet | Compare the crown and comfortable closure position; circumference alone does not settle the choice. |

A real example: Essentials Kids
M 45–49 cm · L 49–54 cm
The light blue and brown Essentials kids cap is available in M and L. Its cotton crown and faux-suede brim mirror the adult design, while the kids sizing is selected separately.
For the L example, BS-CAP-215-L corresponds to the 49–54 cm range. M is BS-CAP-215-M for 45–49 cm. Choose the size that fits now rather than the largest available option.

Movement
Stays putAsk the child to look around and move naturally, then reassess the fit.
Should you buy a larger cap for growing room?
An adjustable closure gives flexibility within the stated range. It does not make an oversized crown comfortable today. If the cap slips or needs constant readjustment, choosing a larger size solely for future growth is not helping the current fit.
At the overlap between M and L, also consider how the crown and brim sit. If you are unsure, send us the measurement and model name rather than relying on an age-based guess.
Let them choose the look
Once the size shortlist is clear, let the child choose a colour or design they enjoy. A single kids cap can be the right option even when a matching adult version exists. Matching is a style choice, not a requirement.
Essentials is a useful starting point for a shared look because the adult cap, kids cap and actual set are all available in the same design. The adult version uses its own range; the smaller kids size is not simply a tighter adult cap.

Originals + Kids
A Family set contains one adult Originals cap and one kids cap in M or L. Measure both wearers and select the child’s size on the set product page.
For the light blue and brown Essentials set, the adult cap is 54–60 cm and the kids options are 45–49 cm or 49–54 cm. Check the selected variant before ordering.

Check the label, remove loose dirt gently and spot clean marks with a soft damp cloth. Pay attention to the sweatband as well as the outside, and let the cap dry fully before storing it. Treat the faux-suede brim and patches carefully.
The easy rinse routine reported for Flow, Motion, Pulse and Aero should not automatically be applied to kids Originals. The materials and construction differ. Use the Family care advice for the appropriate starting point.
What age is kids size M or L for?
We recommend selecting by head circumference rather than assigning a fixed age. Children of the same age can have different measurements. M is 45–49 cm and L is 49–54 cm; check how the crown sits as well.
My child measures exactly 49 cm. Which size should I choose?
The two ranges meet at 49 cm. Repeat the measurement, then compare the model’s crown fit and comfortable adjustment position. There is no single answer from that number alone. Contact us with the model name if you need help.
Can a child wear an adult cap instead?
Only a measurement comparison is not enough to establish a good fit. Adult crown and brim proportions can sit differently even if the closure tightens sufficiently. Start with the kids range and assess the actual fit rather than assuming an adult cap is equivalent.
Do I have to buy a Family set?
No. Kids caps are available individually. Choose a single cap when the child wants their own style, or an actual matching set when both wearers want the same design.
